Tijuana Mural Artist in Alaska
DownloadRicardo Burquez adds detail to the uphill section of his most recent mural on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2021 at Rendezvous Senior Day Services Center in Ketchikan, Alaska. The Ketchikan based artist has kicked off a mural naming contest with the Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council this week and will host a mural naming contest similar to the contest he held in 2018, during the naming of the Dock Street mural "Tireless Tides." All elementary aged students are invited to submit a name for the mural either as an individual, or as part of a team. Burquez hoped that educators and parents were encouraged to help tutor participants with images and stories which they could translate to something "poetic." "The painting is pretty much like a poem." According to Burquez the mural represents a collection of old memories of Ketchikan. This year's winner will be presented with a prize that can be collected from the Arts and Humanities Council following the mural's name revealing on Oct. 1.
